Barn wedding venues in North Norfolk

Chaucer Barn, in the village of Gresham in North Norfolk, is the ultimate laid back outdoorsy place to celebrate. The barn itself is kind of flexible, luxurious holiday accommodation that you can choose to use for your wedding party however you want. There’s a number of rooms – some in the modern wing of the building, some with some of the traditional Norfolk flint that characterises this part of the country. If you’re looking for Chaucer Barn wedding photography for your celebration, or even at the early stages of considering Chaucer as a venue, then hopefully this post will be helpful/interesting (delete as appropriate!)

I’ve photographed weddings there in both Summer and Winter and seen the space used in different ways – ceremonies in the woodlands or main barn, drinks and speeches in the lawn, a classically pretty marquee in the grounds or throwing the big doors open in their main dining space to let the outside in, or keeping it cosy with candles and fairylights in the depths of winter.

A summer wedding at Chaucer Barn

Wendy and Craig held their wedding at Chaucer Barn at the height of summer, which meant they got to use all the spaces. A beautiful ceremony, with music and poetry, in their woodland glade. It’s a little walk from the house, and so you get these epic photos of your guests in the landscape, making their way to the seats.

After speeches on the main terrace, they headed to the prettiest little marquee set up in a grassy clearing, before parting the night away in the main barn and finishing the evening with a sparkler send off.

Can I get married outdoors?

Chaucer Barn has a number of outdoor spaces for your wedding ceremony – they have the woodland that you might have already seen above in Wendy & Craig’s wedding photos, but they also have their own stone circle, situated in a grassy meadow away from the house. The stone circle is perfect for those wanting an alternative wedding ceremony – maybe humanist, maybe with a pagan celebrant.

You can have a legally binding civil ceremony in the woodland. Rules on outdoor ceremonies changed slightly after the Pandemic, but different registration services have adopted their own rules. Previously you were able to say any parts of the ceremony that were non legally binding such as your own vows outdoors, and then be under a licensed structure (in the case of Chaucer barn, they have a licensed pergola) to sign the schedule and say the legally binding vows. Chaucer Barn falls under Norfolk registration services, and they can advise on the current requirements.

A winter wedding at Chaucer Barn

Keeley and Russell got married in the magical period between Christmas and New Year. The ground was crisp with frost and it was one of those truly lovely winter days where the sky is clear and you have a truly excellent sunset. Owing to the time of year, they kept the celebrations indoors, using the main barn space for both their ceremony, for drinks and then later for dancing; and dining in the more modern space. I hope this gives you an exciting preview of how the venue could work for a winter wedding.
