Highly Commended at The Wedding Industry Awards 2023
I entered The Wedding Industry Awards (usually abbreviated to TWIA, which I’ll switch to in order to save my fingers!) on a whim back in the Summer. They’re a really great award to enter as the judging is made up of two things – firstly, and probably most importantly, your couples need to give feedback and it all needs to be incredible – like 9 or 10/10 kind of stuff. Then your work and portfolio goes in front of a panel of past winners and industry experts to be judged – they’re looking at your style, but also the way you cater to your clients and the kind of experience you give them.
There’s plenty of other awards out there that look solely at your work – they are often looking for a really strong photojournalistic style, whereas TWIA is fairly holistic. Lots of other awards look for a really strong photojournalistic style, and while that’s what I call myself, I guess my work has a side of whimsy and pretty – it’s not all grannies falling out of their wheelchairs etc….
Anyway, I entered in August and was pretty positive that the deadline was sometime in December; and was constantly prioritising work and delivering photos and just thought ‘I’ll do it later’. So it was exactly 5 days before the deadline that I realised I needed to ask my lovely 2021 and 2022 couples to vote, and boy did they come through. I went along to the East of England Awards ceremony with extremely low expectations – there were some very strong photographers in my category, and the previous winners (3 years in a row!) were up again, so I was both surprised and delighted to be Highly Commended!
